Abraham Lincoln is, of course, the central figure of the Civil War years, in large part because he was President of the United States during this era, but also because of his ability to distill the central issues of this turbulent time into timeless speeches. Your task this week is to read both the First and Second Inaugural Addresses, and compare and contrast them. What (if any) are the similarities between the two speeches? What are the differences? How do these two speeches reflect the concerns of Americans of the time?
